Description

All scenes taken after the opening of Hoani Waititi Marae, the urban pan-tribal marae in Glen Eden, Auckland in April 1980. Ans Westra has focussed on individuals or small groups who were attending the event. A man and a woman are sitting on chairs eating icecreams, with an icecream van visible in the background (frame 1); a woman wearing a korowai (cloak with twisted thrums) is saying farewell to two different people (frames 2 to 4); a young man is seen with his small daughter in his arms and riding on his shoulders (frames 7, 9 & 10); and several people are talking together beside a bus (frames 8 to 12). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
