- Description
All scenes relate to the General Strike held in Wellington on 20th September 1979, while Prime Minister Robert Muldoon was in power. Parliament grounds are not as full as in earlier images from this day (Ans Westra reference numbers AW-1776 to AW-1781). The Beehive and Parliament Buildings are seen in the background with two policemen facing away from the camera in the foreground (frame 1). Two young boys are standing under an umbrella (frames 2, 3 & 9 to 11), one of whom is holding a placard reading "My piggy bank is empty" while their mother (?) is holding one reading "Beware of false profits". Other placards read "Wellington Peace Committee", and "Tax wealth not wages". A young man wearing a woven poncho is holding a his curved placard over his head, protecting him from rain? (frames 5 & 6). A corner of the National library building is seen in the background (frames 7 & 8). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
