- Description
All images taken at the Dowse Art Gallery, Lower Hutt, during the opening of an exhibition of a major series of works on Parihaka by Selwyn Muru. All scenes were taken inside the gallery with the space becoming a marae. Prayers and ceremonies are being held, with Selwyn Muru and Marjorie Rau-Kupa participating with another young woman (frames 1 to 3), and (in frames 1 & 2 Huirangi Waikerepuru is seen on the left). Others who have been identified include Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan (frames 4 & 5); Netta Wharehoka, Ngahina Okeroa and Michael King (frames 5 & 6); Selwyn Muru is also seen in frame 9, & in frame 10 with Tungia Baker; Hone Tuwhare (frames 8 & 11) with Tungia Baker (frame 8) and with Sam Hunt (frame 11). A number of women are wearing Raukura feathers (of Taranaki/Te Ati Awa). Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
