Scenes in Wellington in December 1978

All images taken in Wellington, in several different locations in December 1978. A woman is sitting at a table outside the Miramar TAB (in Miramar Avenue). A sign on the table reads "Miramar Plunket. Christmas Raffle" with a huge parcel wrapped in netting on the ground in front of her. A young man is sitting on the ground by wide doors at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Miramar (frame 2). Street scenes, possibly in the Karori area are seen in frames 3 to 5, with three men working on a roof (frame 4) and a large banner reading "Labour for New Zealand" on the fence of a house (frame 5). A vintage car with a dickie seat (dickey seat, also known as a rumble seat) is parked outside "Copperwood Curios" (in Karori Road, frame 6), and it is seen outside the old Karori Public Library building in frame 7. Several people are outside the Ngaio Public Hall (now the Ngaio Town Hall) in use as a polling booth in frames 8 & 9; and another polling booth is seen in frames 10 to 12 (possibly in the Cubacade). Christmas decorations are draped around shop fronts and lightshades in frames 10 to 12. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
