Description

All frames related to a huge protest by the Wellington Trades Council, with about 12,000 workers demonstrating against wage controls and the fall in living standards. Held in Parliament grounds in June 1976. [See internet: . Page 206 in the book "A history of Trade Unions in New Zealand" by Peter Franks (Victoria University Press. 2001).] Frames 1 to 3 show the densely packed crowd in Parliament grounds; frame 4 show several people up a tree watching proceedings while two policemen stand below looking towards Parliament. Various placards read: "Redundancy [for] Muldoon"; "Govt must hold prices"; and "We want the lot". Frames 8 & 9 show a Māori woman with three small children watching from the path by the Parliamentary Library with a large group of onlookers standing in Hill Street watching from behind the fence. Frames 10 & 11 were taken from the steps of the Parliamentary Library looking down over the concourse in front of Parliament with the crowd below on the lawns and a row of police standing guard above them. Two rows of soldiers are standing in formation at the foot of the steps up to Parliament. The Chief Post Office is seen in the background on the right. Unless otherwise stated, all persons are unidentified. Photographs taken by Ans Westra.
