Description

Sketch map of Ruapuke Island, the Southland Coast, and Awarua Run drawn by Walter Baldock Durrant Mantell circa 1848. Includes a landmark labelled "L. George", possibly Lake George. A cow is depicted on Awarua Run. Also includes sketches of sail and long boats. Text next to one of the long boats reads "Bro[aching] to". Manuscript annotations on the reverse of the map give Mantell's observations of local Māori and the effect of European settlement. Mentions Henrietta Bay, Titi annual harvest, and Tuhawaiki's Estate.
