Te Koraha (Christchurch, N.Z.)

Large house at 59 Hewitts Road, Merivale. Built in 1886 for Arthur Edgar Gravenor Rhodes (1859-1922), with several additions during the following 30 years. The architects were the Christchurch firm Armson and Collins. In 1901, Arthur Rhodes was elected mayor of Christchurch. In that year the house was used as the royal residence for the June visit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York (later King George V and Queen Mary). After Rhodes died in 1922, his wife left for London, and his son sold the house. It was later leased by the Gibson family for their school, Rangi Ruru, which moved into the building in 1923. Rangi Ruru Girls’ School had been founded in 1889 by Miss Helen Gibson and her sisters Mary, Beatrice, Helen, Alice, Lucy, Ethel, Ruth and Winifred. The family bought Te Koraha in 1928, and it later became known as The House. In 2001-2003 the house was restored and adapted for use as a staff and administration centre. Architects Wilkie and Bruce decided to return the house largely to its 1894 exterior appearance. It is a Category 2 Historic Place.
