A pictorial account of an enforced stay of 11 weeks in Tahiti by the crew of the 'Harpley', a Tasmania-built ship on its maiden voyage from Hobart to England, after the ship sprung a leak and was compelled to land as swiftly as possible.

Provenance: Prior to purchase, acquired by Mark Tewfik of Maggs Bros. Ltd, from Hordern House (the Sydney-based antiquarian bookseller) at a book fair in California. Hordern House acquired the item from another purchaser who had acquired the item at auction at Catherine Southan Valuers and Auctioneers Ltd, UK.

Description: The artist's text describes the group as: 'The warriors' caps are made of the skin of the porcupine fish. The armour of cocoa nut [sic] fibres. The spears of shark's teeth.' The 'man' in the scene wears a conical headdress made of woven flax. A tree-like idol has been constructed on a stone base. The figures of the warrior and the man are possibly based on drawings by Alfred Thomas Agate (1812-1846) who visited Drummond's Island in 1841. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
