Digital file created by Alan Whitaker relating to New Zealand soldier William John Browne.
The file contains a transcript made by Whitaker of a diary written by Browne detailing his escape from Sulmona, a prisoner of war camp in Italy, through German occupied Italy to Allied lines, and his subsequent return to New Zealand. Covers time period 11th September 1943 to 6 January 1944.
Includes scanned photographs and maps added by Whitaker, including an image of William John Browne and his bride Alison (nee Riach) on their wedding day in August 1948. Also includes text subtitled 'newspaper clipping - released by Italians' which is reproduced from a New Zealand Herald article 'War Prisoners' published 27 October 1943 .
William John Browne is the uncle of Alan Whitaker.
