" 'In terms of being raw hunks of virtually unmixed sound 'Republican Trees' was in a sister album to 'Salt Stones'. Originally released on Digitalis in an edition of 100 this was our first vinyl release. The covers were screened - one colour on coloured cardstock. We purposefully chose the most garish clashing colour scheme we could. I think the background colour was named after an ice cream flavour. 'Perfect Failure' is still a favourite of mine. I miss my Teisco. 'Sea Of Okhotsk' is a random hunk of disintegrating guitar and santur named after a sizable spot of the world map that we'd never heard of. 'Lite Storms' is an odd piece recorded in an Echo Park basement with one room mic. Helga plays synth and vocalizes while I 'live dub' her performance with three delay/loop pedals. The title of the album was inspired by a Hunter S Thompson quote from Kingdom Of Fear: 'The real power in America is held by a fast-emerging new oligarchy of pimps and preachers who see no need for democracy or fairness or even trees, except maybe the ones in their own yards, and they don't mind admitting it.'. We picked up our copies of this record direct from Digitalis in Tulsa whilst on a Southwest tour and rented a portable record player in a hotel in Marfa, TX to listen to it. That's the sort of thing you can do in a Marfa hotel room. Mastered by Pete Swanson. Helga plays setar, santur, vocals and synth. I play guitar and effects' - Andrew"--File host.
