Illustrative chart accompanying William Booth's 1890 book "In darkest England, and The way out" shows in the side columns data about the prostitutes, criminals, drink traffic, charity, destitution, suicides, misery and deaths in "darkest England". In the centre, from the lower edge and upwards are shown scene of Salvation Army members helping 3 million "shipwrecked" people. Above this, the "City Colony" is illustrated with numerous examples of charities and activities for the rescued people. Further up is the Farm Colony, and further away at the top are ships leaving form British colonies, foreign lands, and "The colony across the sea". At the lower edge is the explanation of the chart.
