- Description
A profile portrait of the face of Isabel Field, née Hodgkins, sister of Frances Hodgkins. Her hair is pinned behind her head, and she wears no visible adornment. The lace of her collar is sketchily represented.
The work is well-documented in correspondence between Frances, Isabel and William in ATL MS-Group-0060; Field family: Field and Hodgkins family papers 1855-1950; specifically WHF to IJH, 23 March 1892; IJH to WHF, 26 March 1892; and WHF to IJH, ca 30 March 1892. Although the work is signed and dated 1891, it was in fact executed early in 1892.

Provenance: The portrait was intended as a gift to Frances Hodgkins' future brother-in-law William Hughes Field (1861-1944). Isabel and William were married in 1893.
