Four-storey wooden building Lambton Quay, designed by William H Clayton, built in the 1870s. 31 October 1873 tenders were invited for the work. Construction began in early 1875 and the building was ready for occupation by Christmas 1876. Two small additions, of three bays each, were added to the back of each wing. Adition to south wing, 1896; addition to north wing, 1907. An annex (now removed) was added to the back of the building between the two wings, in 1925. Original chimneys removed in 1931 (the present apparent chimneys are replicas attached to the roof during restoration of the building in the 1990s. They are not attached to fire places). Wooden entrance steps were replaced by concrete steps in 1958. Now houses Victoria University law department. The name is as used in publications of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. A building on Stout Street designed by John Thomas Mair (1876-1959) is known as the Departmental Building.

The albums are well documented and most of the craftspeople and others involved in the project are identified. These are part of a larger collection which includes notes compiled as part of the historical research for conservation reports on the restoration and refurbishment.
