Description

Photographic portraits taken by various photographers including the Tanner Brothers, J. C. Sinclair, J. Russel and Sons, E. D. Burt, and Steele Photography, taken circa 1888-1940s. Comprises images of Māori men, the Mair brothers, women, landscapes, sites, and flowers. Includes:

- Two images of Paora Tuhaere (wearing a kaitaka style cloak), one is a postcard from the "Tanner Brothers Ltd Photographic Series".

- An image of Sidney (Hirini) Taiwhanga (standing), and Hare Te [Kaihu?] (dressed in a kaitaka), taken by the New Zealand Tourist Department.

- Nakora and Hare Hongi, taken in 1898, by J. C. Sinclair of New Plymouth. This has inscriptions on the back written by Henry Stowell (Hare Hongi), including "Taranaki Hawera" and "Nakora Te Manukarioi - ? 1889"

- Four prints of 'Pieces of eight'

- A clipping of an image of a painting of Eruera Maihi Patuone, a postcard of "Montreal - Big John and party shooting the Lachine Rapids", a postcard of "The Real South Africa" showing a photograph of a woman preparing locusts and children eating them. The postcard includes part of a letter [to James Cowan?] from Henry [Cowan]. An image of Samuel Butler (by J. Russell and Sons), and two copies of an image of Samuel Butler's homestead "at Mesopotamia, on the foothills of the Southern Alps" taken by Professor Speight, Canterbury University College.

- A Real Photo Postcard of Hongi's Track, Rotorua.

- An image of King Tawhiao, taken in 1888 at Napier, and four men on horses, including Gilbert Mair[?] and three Māori men, relating to "Urewera chapter".

- Lake Tamaiti-o-Waikareiti, taken by E. D. Burt, two images of a church (one is the Roman Catholic Church at Rangiaowhia), and one of a car behind a tree.

- Two images of flowers [lillies, and bottle brush?].

- A hand-coloured image of S. Percy Smith, taken by Bartlett and Andrew.

- A series of photographs of "The Mair brothers" including Gilbert Mair on a horse, one of him in an army uniform taken in 1920 by Stewart (a photographer in Rotorua), and one includes Mair sitting at a table outside of a wharenui, next to Apirana Ngata. Also includes an image of Mokoia Island, and an unidentified Māori man dressed in a kahu kiwi and a short woven korowai around his waist.

- A clipping of a photograph of Gilbert Mair, a card with notes about "Captain Mair at Ngahuinga, Harehare, 1920" and two postcards of Parnell Rose Gardens in Auckland, showing Rangitoto Island, and The Mission Church, Wairoa, before the Tarawera Eruption.

- A portrait of Eileen Cowan's sister Mary Mollie Stowell[?] taken by Steele Photography circa 1940s.

- A portrait of a woman in Victorian clothing with a lace collar and cameo broach. The photograph is on a backing board which is cracked at the top (image is also damaged). On the back of the board are the words "love everlasting" in pencil.
