Description

Watercolour depicting view of Crater Lake on Mount Ruapehu showing rocks and snow. The artist has painted himself into the image. There are two figures standing on the peak.

Handritten text below the image reads "Sketched from a point inside the crater on the North side, about 50 feet above the level of the water, on March 8 1984 - Mr Blacket's photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a year before. Mr Dunnage's first photo taken from the opposite side of the crater, was done about a week after this sketch. His second photo taken from the opposite side of the crater was done in April 1895 soon after the erruption of March 10 1895. The black blot in the left foreground is my head. The two figures on the ridge on the left are Mr Willis and my son Frank. The little stream with a waterfall is just over my head, behind the sharp little rocky peak and between it and the snow-field. The high South peak "(the second peak from the South)" is the rock a little to the left of the centre, against the sky-line."
