- Description
Head and shoulders portrait of the Maori leader. He wears his hair short, with two huia feathers. His face has full moko. He wears a white European shirt and a green cape pinned at the shoulder. Hutton writes of his subject: 'This is a likeness of a Maori chief, the first I saw in the country. Now I have again come to Auckland, I have taken his likeness, being interesting[?] as an old acquaintance.'
