Description

A view of several European-style buildings, fenced with a Maori-style pallisade. Two men, one wearing a schoolmaster's gown and mortar-board, approach from the left; two Maori boys approach from the middle of the scene. The legend beneath the image identifies the buildings as the 'Infant school'; 'College store - kitchen - hall'; 'English boys'achoolroom'; and 'Breakfast men room'. Hutton writes: 'This "collegian vicissitude" ought to have been the No.1 of the series, as it is the first house that the collegians inhabited. It contained the schoolroom, bachelor men room, boys dormitories, Mr Cotton and my own room, and Mr and Mrs Chapman's apartments.'
