Profile view of a Maori man, identified as Hemi Kepa Tupe, one of the Whangaroa chiefs. He sits dressed in European clothes although barefoot. His face shows full moko.
Artist describes image as 'a likeness of one of the two principal Whangaroa chiefs – Mr Shepherd sent up to his house to ask him to come down – when he came and heard that we only wanted to draw him, he said “Oh is that all? I thought you might have some tobacco for me.”. However he put himself in a position of a man determined to perform a disagreeable duty.'
