- Description
Photograph of a sculpture of a New Zealand World War I soldier by William Thomas Tretheway, Trethewey & Berry, on exhibition in an art gallery [probably the 1921 Canterbury Art Society annual exhibition]. Two men are moving a sheet hanging behind the statue. Taken by the Steffano Webb Photographic Studio, Christchurch.
This statue was identified as the one on top of the Kaiapoi war memorial, exhibited by the Canterbury Art Society in 1921, and unveiled at its Kaiapoi River location on 26 April 1922. The statue was vandalised in April 1930 and the bayonet on the rifle was removed (see "Kaiapoi war memorial, NZ History website https://nzhistory.govt.nz/media/photo/kaiapoi-war-memorial; and https://libraries.waimakariri.govt.nz/heritage/local-history/places-of-the-waimakariri/kaiapoi/a-brief-history-of-the-kaiapoi-war-memorial; and "Callous vandalism", Evening Post, 28 April 1930; and "Canterbury Art Society annual exhibition", The Press, 30 March 1921).
