Images show scenes at the first Festival of the Arts, held in Mahinarangi meeting house at Tūrangawaewae, Ngaruawahia. Photographs taken in December 1963 by Ans Westra. Frames 1 to 4 show Theo Schoon and Paratene Matchitt with Theo Schoon's decorated gourds. Frames 6 to 9 show Sister Dawn McNicol. Frames 10 and 11 show Hone Tuwhare reading his poems in the meeting house. Unless otherwise stated all persons are unidentified.
Images show crowds of visitors inside Mahinarangi and speakers addressing them. Some of the exhibits appear in the scenes. Outside a nun stands among children.
