Description

Photostat negative copy of lithographed topographical map compiled by William Bogle, Napier.Alfred Jarman, Litho. Napier, Hawke's Bay, N.Z.

Map provides details of key dates and locations of the Land Wars from the period 1864 to 1873.

- Te Rore - General Cameron camped with 2400 men, 28th January 1864.

- Paterangi - Held against the troops by the Natives for 23 days & evacuated by them on the night of 20th February 1864.

- Kihikihi - Formerly the fighting Chief Rewi's village.

- Rangiawhia - Colonel Nixon mortally wounded in action, 21 February 1864.

- Orakau - Pa taken by the troops on the 2nd April 1864, and Captain Ring of the 18th R I mortally wounded. This was the last action fought in Waikato.

- Lyons - Murdered by native named Kiheroa, near the Takanui Ford, January 1870. The native is supposed to have since committed suicide.

- Todd - Murdered by Tapihana & party, 28th November 1870, in the Pirongia Ranges.

- Sullivan - Murdered by Purukutu & party, 25th April 1873, in the Moana Tuatua Swamp.

Map also shows Coach & Dray Roads, Bridle Roads, and Telegraph Lines.
