Published by A. H. and A. W. Reed, Dunedin, 1934. Contains a preface by James Cowan. Loose material laid in to the volume comprises: a newspaper clipping about the Tarawera eruption; a postcard of the Mission Church, Wairoa, before the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a painting of the Mount Tarawera eruption mounted on card which has a cartoon pasted on the back called 'Native auction' that shows a group of Māori people auctioning off missionaries' bones while standing on a platform in front of what looks like a pātaka (food store); a photograph of Rewiri, sitting in front of a small hut covered in mud and ash after the Tarawera eruption; a photograph of a sketch by S. Percy Smith of Puwai Island (Lake Rotomahana) dated 1858; and a typescript of an annotated draft article titled 'Manx Memories: The mermaid's 400' dated Oct 1941 by Cowan, relating to the migration of his mother's father James Qualtrough, from the Isle of Man to New Zealand, in the 1850s. The photograph of Rewiri is taken by the Burton Brothers at Te Wairoa, 1886, and is wrongly attributed as being a photograph of 'Tuhoto the tohunga' on an inscription on the back.
