St George, John Chapman, 1844-1869: Draft lease agreement

Draft lease agreement for land at Kaingaroa, Taupo, in the name of John Chapman St George, dated 29 April 1867, without signatures.

Draft with corrections, alterations and amendments of an agreement between John Chapman St George and "chiefs and people of the Ngatitahu tribe residing at Waikato in Taupo", for a 25-year lease of a block of land called Kaingaroa situated at Taupo, for the purposes of "depasturing sheep or for any other purpose".

Provides a description of natural landmarks demarcating the boundaries of the block of land and conditions of lease, including amount to be paid annually. Also makes provisions for the removal of timber "from the forests nearest to any of [the] boundaries for the purpose of fencing, building houses, firewood, or for any other purpose required on the said land. The same to be without any charge". Also makes provision for destruction of all dogs found on the land.

Further provisions of the lease include an agreement by "the said aboriginal Natives" to attend the Native Land Court for the purposes of obtaining a Crown Grant, and that the land is to be surveyed - with the cost of surveying to be covered by rent payments made for the first year of the lease.
