Talks by Paul Diamond, Roger Blackley, Vincent O'Malley, and Hamish Clayton given at the National Library of New Zealand in March 2013, as part of the 'Head and Shoulders: Portraits of Maori by Isaac Coates' exhibition in Turnbull Gallery, which ran from 21 January to 16 March 2013.
The talks are in English and feature an opening mihimihi and introduction in Maori.
The exhibition, Head and Shoulders: Portraits of Maori by Isaac Coates, was curated by Paul Diamond and ran at Turnbull Gallery from 21 January to 16 March 2013. It was the first time that the twenty-four portraits by Coates at the Alexander Turnbull Library had been exhibited together, more than 160 years after they were painted. Little is known about why Coates painted the portraits during the brief two-year period he lived in Nelson between 1843 and 1845. Most of the subjects in the portraits came from Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-a-Maui, the top of the South Island, but figures from other tribal areas also feature in the portraits.

Description: Historians Hilary and John Mitchell have led a resurgence in scholarship revealing the forgotten Māori history of Te Tau Ihu (Nelson-Marlborough), and illuminating ‘the very active roles Māori played in the new society born of European colonisation.’ In this presentation they talked about the background to their research, including the significance of Coates’s Māori portraits held in collections here and overseas.
