Interview with Rex Holswich, born in New Plymouth in 1924. Discusses growing up in Fitzroy, mischief he got up to, and taking an engineering course at New Plymouth Boys' High School. Refers to serving in the Air Force as a wireless operator/gunner at Guadalcanal during World War 2. Mentions marrying Joan, a former WAAF, in 1946, and joining a construction course for returned servicemen. Talks about building state houses as part of the training, doing carpentry, and the good design of the houses. Mentions their housing problems and eventually getting a state house. Describes family activities at home, celebrating Christmas and birthdays, and visiting his parents on Sundays. Comments on the friendly neighbourhood and children playing together in paddocks. Mentions his wife Joan went back to work and they shared the household chores including cooking. Refers to being grateful for the chance to buy their house and the changes they made to it. Comments that attitudes towards state housing have changed over time from it being a privilege to being a right.
