Interview with Alan Rice born 1931 in Wellington. Discusses his childhood of being brought up by a single mother during the Depression on a War Widow's Pension. Talks about his education and his first job with Shell Oil and working for them for 40 years. Describes his involvement in bicycle racing. Talks about his own short racing career (1947-1955, 1965) and various races and tracks including the Basin Reserve and the Hataitai Velodrome. Talks about the differences in hard and grass track racing. Refers to the presence of women in cycling. Discusses the reasons why he stopped racing and became an official. Mentions the lack of officials in the sport today. Describes his experiences as a cycling official in Wanganui, New Plymouth and Wellington (Port Nicholson Poneke Cycling Club). Explains the various roles of officials within cycling. Talks about organising races in particular the Dulux Cycle Race. Refers to sponsorship and conflicts with traffic officers at races. Discusses the experiences of the 1981 New Zealand Games. Mentions various cyclists and incidents at these games.
