Description

Christine Cole Catley recalls coming to Wellington from Canterbury University in 1946 to work on the Labour daily, the Southern Cross. Refers to Winston Rhodes, tutor at Canterbury, Allen Curnow, Dennis Glover, Margaret Jepson, Monty Holcroft and John Reece Cole whom she married. Discusses Monty Holcroft and his contribution; setting up of Queen Elizabeth Arts Council, now Creative New Zealand; legal and political matters; setting up of Authors Fund; elitism of PEN in early days; proliferation of publishers; generosity of Eric McCormick and Bernard Brown; London flat [Bloomsbury] and change in composition of PEN / NZSA. Talks about changes for women over last 30 years.
