Bernard Brown talks about joining the Auckland Branch of PEN ca 1970, and becoming treasurer, a position he has held since. Recalls personalities around at the time - Shadbolt, [Keith] Sinclair, [Karl] Stead, Dick Scott, Kendrick Smitherland, Margaret Sutherland, Una Platts, Keith Sorrenson, David Ballantyne, Dennis McEldowney, Eric McCormack and John A Lee with Mrs John A Lee. Refers to Graham Lay and his short story `Dear Mr Kearney' which refers to a PEN meeting. Discusses changes made by Alistair Patterson, and how meetings were run. Recalls story about Captain Ted Parsons and a visit by Nicholas Hazlitt. Discusses other matters including copyright issues, removal of tariffs, contacts with local publishers and agents, lack of Maori membership, own publishing history, problems with Creative New Zealand, poor support from the National Party, and the Bloomsbury flat.
