Description

Two seminars for women in the National Party were held in Taupo and Christchurch early in 1981. Organised by Sue Wood, Woman Vice-President and Dominion councillor, the seminars aimed at uniting women in the Party by in-depth discussion of fundamental issues. Four themes as addressed in key papers were discussed: the individual, the family, the community and the nation. The collection comprises incomplete proceedings from each seminar. The purpose and format of the seminars is given in the recording from the later Christchurch seminar.

Partial contents:

Tape 2 - Includes reports from National Party Womens Seminar held at Taupo on the sessions discussing the individual and the state. Workshop discussions were based on a paper prepared by Ruth Richardson who concludes the discussion by explaining that her paper gave special emphasis to the Danks Committee Report advocating greater freedom of access to official information by NZ citizens.

Tape 3 - Reports from Taupo National Women's Seminar workshops discussing the Nation, particularly the importance of external trade, NZ's role in the Pacific, the disadvantaged political position of Maori and women. Speakers include Ian McLean, author of the discussion paper, commenting on key aspects of the subject; NZ's being a South Pacific state and most nationally distinctive because of its Maori ancestry and culture.

Tape 4 - Includes: Sue Wood's opening address to the Christchurch seminar and outline of the programme; welcome from Canterbury-Westland Division; Murray Hunter of the local Division and National's Policy Committee introducing discussion on the Party's constitution particularly as it relates to women; input from Dominion councillor Dorothy McNab on the constitution; invited comment from Grace Hollander, former Dominion President of the National Council of Women, on the Seminar's themes and the role of women.

Tape 5 - Includes summation of workshop discussions from the Christchurch National Party Women's Seminar, particularly on the theme of the Nation; comments from former MP Colleen Dewe on aspects of nationhood outlined in her paper; final comments from Sue Wood, seminar organiser.
