Description

Eric Henry Leask recalls joining Tararua Tramping Club in 1933 at the age of 16, being one of the youngest members, and feeling intimidated by the hierarchy. Mentions help from Gordon Mace and Harold Douglas. Recalls Sutch search done by the Search and Rescue Team and the advent of radio during this time. Refers to social club and entertainment put on at weekly meetings. Other aspects of club life recalled include: interclub football with the Hutt Valley Tramping Club; use of a coal truck for transport; occupations of members; ethnic backgrounds of members; relations between genders and attitudes towards morality, with reference to use of chaperones on early trips. Talks about his involvement with maintenance of huts and tracks. Mentions comradeship and fellowship found within the Club and tramping culture. Refers to conservation issues, with reference to the Department of Conservation (DOC) and involvement with the Federated Mountain Clubs (FMC). Mentions sad memories and talks about Bill Bridge, a past Club president, who died on a search and rescue and Chas Shaw who was killed while climbing. Also mentions Ray Jeffries.
