Anna Whitley (nee Tabunawati) born Kiribati 1958 where she trained as a primary and secondary school teacher. Recalls coming to New Zealand at the age of 21 years to do a Diploma in English as a second language at Victoria University. Discusses decision to join nursing programme at Polytechnic and her difficulties with the English language, passed assignments but failed multi-choice exams. Describes efforts by the Polytechnic to help her and refers to Pushba Wood, Mel Martin and Amanda Bradley. Talks about services for students with English as a second language and emphasises the need for supervision intent on developing their skills.
