Description

Margaret Ceilidh Reid (nee Cummings) born Northern Ireland and came to New Zealand when nine years old. Outlines family background - mother had New Zealand passport before she met and married father, an Irishman, and had five children before deciding to come to New Zealand. Recalls arrival at Port Chalmers and being met by grandfather in Dunedin. Describes life in Dunedin: King Edward Technical College, Otago Girls' High School and Browns Commercial College; school uniforms; social life; involvement in war activities and carnival in Main Street Dunedin at end of war. Talks about marriage to Edward John (Ted) Reid at South Dunedin Presbyterian Church, reception at RSA and after 8 years, transfer to Wellington, settling at Tawa Flat which was semi rural. Recalls choosing section on Main Road and refers to architect, Reg Hoare, and builder, Bert Hart. Mentions how supplies for the house building were held up by the Waterfront strike. Describes facilities: septic tank; heating with open fire; cooking by electricity; telephone, with reference to party line; grocery stores; community spirit; social life, with reference to Fire Brigade Ball, Plunket Ball etc at Tawa Hall. Recalls teaching Sunday School at St Stephens Church. Mentions Mexted Motors. Discusses involvement in fund raising for Scout Hall, Guild Hall, and skating rink and refers to Progressive Association. Also mentions involvement with Tawa / Linden Drama Group. Talks about changes in Tawa, with reference to population, houses and land development.
