Description

May Rose Cuttle (nee McKay) born Porirua 1916. Explains that family moved to Tawa in 1913 as father worked as a tablet porter on the Railway. Talks about good neighbourhood spirit in Tawa and describes farm land and swamp, with reference to flooding. Discusses schools and refers to teachers: Miss Callender, Miss Farquharson and Miss Coney. Recalls children's games - marbles, hop scotch, skipping, nuts and may, races, basketball and Saturday night dances held in school room. Mentions fish deliveries and bulk buying of groceries and explains how flour bags were used for tea towels. Describes train service; churches; metal roads and lack of footpaths; housing and telephone service with reference to party lines and details changes in district having lived in Tawa for 85 years.
