Alan Willoughby Carlisle Lion born Patea 1921. Outlines family background - father was a Home minister for the Presbyterian church, having trained in Glasgow at the Bible Institute. Mother was organist at the Great Ormond Street Mission in London. Explains that father's appointments from the Home Mission Board were usually for four years, hence family moved around. Recalls: living in the Manse; earthquake; Pongaroa school; move to Tuatapere, with reference to 14 sawmills in the district; move to Hedgehope then Springburn and Ashburton; Addington Stockhouse Sale; evidence of 1930s Depression; cost of running a model T Ford car and first employment with Gough, Gough and Hamer. Gives details of World War II service with 25 Squadron, a dive bomber squadron, servicing planes. Refers to taking over Seagrove from American Marines. Mentions `The Bloody Knoll' in Henderson Field.
Discusses marriage at St Andrews Church in Ashburton and move to Dunedin after the war (1945). Backgrounds involvement with St Andrews Church Dunedin and describes congregation and compares with Knox and Ashburton congregations. Mentions Laurie Bibby, Alister McLean, [Charles] Bowie, and Sid Smale. Refers to Outreach, counselling and Cameron Centre. Recalls being named a Deacon and then an elder.
