Description

Athol Jackson recalls childhood at Mays Road, Te Papapa, transport to meetings and the Friends Meeting house which he describes. Recalls increase in membership which meant Wakefield meeting house was too small, so a new building, Mt Eden Meeting House, was designed and built by Theodore West, and opened in 1913. Mentions Ernest and Thomas Wright. Describes social life amongst the Friends; imprisonment of young men Friends during World War I and their contribution of christmas cake for all prisoners. Gives reasons for the Friends non-involvement in both wars. Refers to Adjutant Gill, Farrands and Wright. In an appendix to the abstract Athol gives more information on conscientious objectors and detention camps; flowers for prisoners scheme and christmas cake scheme; the Young Friends Newsletter, originally for prisoners but later became the New Zealand Friends Newsletter.
