Barbara Marchant born Palmerston North, moved to Feilding at the age of two years. Outlines family background - father, John Stalker was an All Black. Maternal grandmother, Zoe Barber (nee Minifie) - family came on the early ships. Describes Feilding and farming community. Recalls: neighbours; pastimes; boarding school; basketball; gym frocks (uniform) and reasons for failing Matric. Talks about employment situation and gaining position as trainee with YWCA where she remained for 10 years. Describes YWCA's attitude to basketball. Gives details of duties of a trainee. Mentions: Elsie Bennett; Agnes Kennedy and Jean Molesworth. Mentions that YWCA had one of the first fencing clubs in New Zealand. Recalls sitting New Zealand Umpire theory exam in Palmerston North. Refers to Cathy Doyle. Talks about marriage to Leslie Harold Marchant 1944 and move to Wellington. Recalls first National Tournament as an umpire in 1948, followed by Palmerston North in 1952 and then Dunedin. Was an examiner for local and provincial umpires and details aspects of performance judged. Considers netball has progressed a lot over the years.
