Description

Margaret Mary Urlich was born in Auckland, in 1964. Discusses her family at length and illustrates her strict catholic upbringing. Mentions Maori and Yugoslavian ancestry and grandfather who was a gumdigger in Ahipara and Kaitaia. Outlines childhood in Blockhouse Bay, education at private catholic schools, education streaming systems, University Entrance and early exposure and enjoyment of music. Remembers family's participation in local talent quests. Outlines varied work after high school and joining brother Patrick Urlich's band the Corners in 1983 as vocalist.

Discusses singing back up vocals, live performances, image and clothing and New Zealand musical groups including the Finn Brothers, The Mockers and Dance Exponents. Talks about award for Best Female Vocalist 1984 and singers Jackie Fitzgerald, Patsy Riggir, Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Aretha Franklin, Chakka Khan and Joni Mitchell. Outlines singing with band Peking Man before meeting Debbie Harwood, Annie Crummer, Kim Whilloughby and Diane Sawn of Everything That Flies and forming new group When the Cat's Away in 1986. Recounts origins of name and recording success.

Describes solo career and the launch of her first album, 'Safety in Numbers' in 1989. Talks about song writing, marriage to Nick Mainsbridge and later separation, touring, backing bands, subsequent albums and success in New Zealand and Australia. Discusses return to New Zealand for Jesus Christ Superstar with Frankie Stevens and George Henare.
