Description

Alice Marjorie Fieldhouse born Auckland. Talks about her training as nurse at Auckland Hospital; maternity training at Whangarei Hospital; post graduate course, Wellington (1941); Plunket training; BA degree Wellington (1950); and MA Teachers College, Columbia University, New York (1951-1952).

Describes becoming involved with UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration). Recalls trip to Germany - flying boat from Mechanics Bay, Auckland. Describes Displaced persons camp in former Luftwaffe Barracks and duties undertaken; big vaccination programme - Smallpox and Diphtheria. Discusses move to a British Red Cross hospital at Gerleve (Benedictine Monastery) which she describes. Describes US study experience. Talks about Commonwealth Fund Fellowship and position with WHO in Western Pacific. Alice has also been interviewed as part of NERF oral history project.
