Description

Margaret MacKay born Oamaru 1903. Outlines family background - father, Adam Mackay, born Kilmarnock (Scotland) and emigrated to Oamaru with widowed mother and brother, where he eventually ran a grocery business. Paternal grandfather, James Grave, was a merchant trader between Oamaru and Australia. Mentions W G Grave and his explorations which are described by his daughter, Anita Crozier in `Beyond Southern Lakes'.

Margaret describes her childhood, household duties, school, holiday home owned by family at Waianakarua, and work in a local legal firm, qualifying as a solicitor in 1920. Describes work as a woman lawyer in a conservative small town, the good treatment she received from her brother solicitors, the effects of the Depression (1930s) on the firm and community and her life at Waianakarua, an area noted for rhododendrons. Concludes by describing her involvement with the Presbyterian Support Services and the origin of the Iona Home for the aged in which she was also involved.
