Interview with Anson Austin

Mr Anson Austin describes musical associations in family background, childhood memories and early musical experiences. Recalls his discovery and development of his voice by Clifton Cook at Christchurch Boys' High School, and his first engagements in New Zealand. Describes his first work with New Zealand Railways Engineering Department, and departure for London where he sang with the BBC singers. Recalls engagement by the Australian Opera Company, and his experiences in learning to sing opera. Describes development of his career as opera singer, and in partnering Joan Sutherland in Australian Opera appearances, including her farewell performances in 1990. Discusses coaching with Dominique Modesti and development of his voice 1970s-1980s. Recalls work in operetta, favourite singers, effect of New Zealand background and upbringing on voice and talent. Remembers humorous incidents in career and gives advice to singers starting out. Recalls coaching with Jack Metz and describes leisure activities and families.
