Description

A view from the southern end of Ocean Beach, better known as St Clair Beach, or Second Beach, of the newly-built Cargill's Castle ('the Cliffs'), sitting atop the cliff. A large outbuilding can be seen to the west of the house. The painting is taken from the dunes of the beach, and the figures of people, including one on a horse, are visible

'The Cliffs' was completed in 1877. Later images show the extensive planting in front of the house, which was built in concrete to withstand the elements. The landscape in this image is relatively bare
