Description

Shows Nelson Harbour, between Tahunanui and Nelson Haven, incorporating the newly-constructed sea wall. The foreshore and hills above are dotted with houses and other early buildings, and a jetty can be seen at the far end. A line of trees on the top of the closest hill stands out. The calm harbour water shows various small boats, including a rowboat with three men coming ashore in the foreground

The road along the Nelson Haven foreshore was completed in 1899. Surveyor and engineer Sam Jackel was commissioned to construct a concrete seawall. The wall was built by prisoners from the Nelson Goal and completed in 1897. A chain fence was erected along part of the wall in 1898 to protect the public from the vertical drop into the sea below (which suggests this scene was painted before 1898)
