Description

Autograph album belonging to Edith Audrey Beeton. Includes entries from 1908 to 1918, including the period when she was a nurse during the First World War at the St George's Hill Auxiliary Hospital, Weybridge, England. Includes sketches and autographs of New Zealand and Newfoundland soldiers.

The approximately 185 autograph entries generally consist of the individual's name and service number, rank and unit, along with the date of the entry. Some also have a personal remark added, such as 'In remembrance of happy hours spent in Walton', by a member of the New Zealand Light Railway Operating Company.

Ownership inscription on first free endpaper states 'Edith Audrey Beeton, July 30th 1908, 310 St James Court, Westminster, S.W.I.'

The album includes eleven original artistic illustrations and two illustrated manuscript programmes laid in:

- Ink drawing of a cat, signed by E Caldwell of the SS 'Pythia', dated 25 October 1910.

- Pencil drawing of a dog named 'Don', signed Eileen Hood, dated 1909.

- Ink and watercolour drawing of a young girl wearing clogs, signed W Cowles, no date.

- Ink drawing with the title 'London Bridge, Torquay', signed with initials, dated 1918.

- Pencil drawing of mounted cavalry soldier on horseback, signed, no date.

- Pencil and watercolour drawing of a female in profile, signed Violet Hood, dated 4 September 1908.

- Ink drawing of a stylised nurse in uniform, signed, dated 1918.

- Ink and coloured pencil cartoon-style drawing depicting war scenarios from a New Zealand soldier's perspective, signed 'W S Cumberland N.Z.R.B.', dated 29 December 1917.

- Pencil drawing of the head of a horse wearing a full double bridle, also known as a Weymouth bridle, signed Kitty Hood, dated 27 September 1908.

- Pencil and watercolour drawing of a child wearing clogs and seated on a fence holding two chickens, signed R G Lee, no date, on paper mounted on album page.

- Watercolour drawing of a building and gardens with large trees, signed, dated 8 September 1908.

- Ink on paper, manuscript programme with illustration on cover, bifolium, 'Programme. Cranford. House 4. March 26th', includes list of roles and cast ('Dramatis Personae') and an overview of the play in two acts (four scenes).

- Ink, pencil and watercolour, manuscript programme with illustration on front cover, bifolium tied with pink ribbon, 'Program - Love is Blind', includes cast list divided into 'extras' and 'propers'.
