Description

An imaginative scene by the artist of William James Hardham rescuing a fellow soldier under heavy fire, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. The rescued soldier is climbing onto Hardham's horse while Hardham tries to control it as it rears up in fright; there is another horse lying dead on the ground, and explosions going off around them

Hardham was the only New Zealander to win the V.C. during the Boer War. He was later promoted to Lieutenant and served with the 9th Contingent. He would go on to serve as a Captain with the Wellington Mounted Rifles, New Zealand Expeditionary Force during World War I. He saw action in Egypt, Gallipoli (where he was seriously wounded), the Sinai and Palestine
