Description

Comprises photographic prints and proof sheets relating to service of James (Jim) Green on the New Zealand Navy survey vessel HMNZS 'Lachlan' circa 1948 to 1975. Also relates to crew reunions for the 1st and 2nd commissions 1949-1955 organised by Jim Green in 1974, 1984 and a proposed reunion in 1995. Photographs taken by Peter Pan Studio, Auckland, Robert Williamson, Westport, RNZAF Photography, RNZN, and unidentified amateur and professional photographer(s) between circa 1948 and 1991.

- One set of images relate to the 'Lachlan' crew circa 1948 to early 1950s; showing Brum Edwards, James Green, Frank Arnold, Charlie Bone, Aussie Wallace, Ken Howard, and Bill Albard at Sydney Harbour 1949, a naked Japanese lady (inscribed 'Welcome to Japan, Kure, Japan 1952', James Green and other ratings at M'boro, Australia 1950; a crew soccer team, uniformed crew members in parks, two ratings from the 'Atlantis', crew members on deck and on wharf, an RNZAF pilot, a RAF aeroplane on the deck of HMS 'Illustrious', a naval funeral and a group of Wrens. Also includes a view of two crew on deck inscribed '1951 wharf strike'.

- One set of images relate to the service of the 'Lachlan' as a survey vessel in the Pacific; showing crew members with village people and female friends, and crew members in uniform wearing lei.

-One set of images relate to hydrographic survey work; includes support vessels being lowered from ship and out offshore, James Green and others on survey trip to Campbell Island, crew (including Buster Hornblow) using surveying and radio communication instruments, floating beacon offside, officers in the chart room, the 'Lachlan' ship off Rangitoto Island and a man developing photographs in a basin after Fiordland Sounds trip. Some images possibly taken during the survey of Banks Peninsula.

- One set of images show formal portraits of the HMNZS 'Lachlan' crew in uniform, James Green in naval uniform with an air force unit 1949, and 'Lachlan' ship at sea with other naval vessels, possibly taken 1960s to 1970s.

-One set of images relate to reunion activities in 1974 and 1984; includes group portraits of crew and wives while socialising, speeches and prayers, men in parade ground being inspected, gift presentations, and a navy rum drinking ceremony.

-One set of images relate to the family life of James Green; includes portraits of a World War One soldier and a woman circa 1900s, Green chopping down a large tree 1991, and Padre Patrick Pullan.

The HMNZS 'Lachlan' was utilised during the 1951 Waterfront lockout to load ships at Dunedin and Wellington wharves, and load coal at Westport.
