Seated portrait of a Maori woman wearing a blue European-style dress, and wrapped in a cream shawl. Her black wavy hair is fastened in a bun at the nape of her neck. She holds a small child within her shawl; the child is probably of mixed race, as he has fair skin and light brown hair. A number of buildings, possibly part of a stockade, are sketched in the background
