Description

Colour slide photographs taken by John Reinder Fijn at Whakarewarewa thermal area, circa 1960s.

Includes images of an unidentified guide wearing a headscarf and carrying a basket, four young women doing a poi dance in front of thermal area, a portrait of a kapa haka performer in front of carved wharenui at the Whakarewarewa Model Pa, and a boy standing in front of thermal area with Whakarewarewa Village, including Church of the Immaculate Conception, in the background.

Three slides are mounted in metal and glass slide holders constructed by Fijn.

Further information - according to Fijn's daughter Tineke, Fijn took the photographs of the kapa haka performers at Whakarewarewa on commissioner (information provided during visit to view the collection in the Heaphy Room 5 Sep 2014)
