Description: Photographic portraits and writing generated from a collaborative project between photographer Russell Kleyn, writer and facilitator Janie Walker and members of the Kilbirnie Masjid | Mosque in 2019 to 2020. Includes 21 digital photographs of Kilbirnie Masjid community members which were taken over the course of the year. Also includes the 21 photographs printed and mounted for use in the project exhibition, held on 15 March 2020 at the Kilbirnie Masjid during the mosque’s annual community open day. A project outline dated 2024 documents the project and exhibition and includes: collective writing, notes from interviews by Janie Walker with the community members in the photographs, and creative writing developed during a workshop held in the Masjid. Title supplied by Library. Not all portraits from the project are included as seven of the original participants did not give permission to have their images used beyond the original exhibition. The project grew out of the friendship between Russell Kleyn and the then manager of the Kilbirnie Masjid, Tahir Nawaz, and following the mass-shooting at the Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch on 15 March 2019. Kleyn approached Janie Walker to be involved. The project became a collaboration with the members of the Kilbirnie Masjid | Mosque community. The Kilbirnie Masjid and the International Muslim Association of New Zealand are both at the Kilbirnie Islamic Centre.
