Description

Eleven Maori men on a maypole-type swing (moari or morere). Part of the palisade of a pa in the left background

Reproduced in Grey, George. Polynesia Mythology. (London, 1855) p. 72. Also reproduced in Angas, G F. The New Zealanders illustrated (London, 1847) without acknowledgement to Merrett. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844, the date at which he copied Merrett's drawing.

There is a similar drawing by Merrett in the Turnbull's Hobson Album, page 17, reference E-216-f-017, titled 'A native game'. The album was compiled in 1842-1843.
