Description

Conveys the gratitude felt by the Hutt Valley resident that a plaque was recently installed on Tinakori Hill, Wellington, to commemorate the coastwatchers killed by Japanese soldiers at Betio on Tarawa Atoll (now Kiribati). Notes that one of the soldiers was his cousin. Names those responsible for organising the plaque. Describes disappointment felt at the lack of official recognition of the event. Backgrounds the incident on Tarawa in 1942. Lists the names of the seven Post Office radio operator civilians and ten soldiers who were killed.
